Confessions in times of war: Samer Hanna

14/10/2024

Where are our culturel players in times of war, and what are they doing?

L'Agenda Culturel went to meet them, interview them and listen to their stories.

Samer Hanna - Actor /Director

How are you doing

Numb- empty - broken

What is your daily life like in times of war?

As a theater maker who was used to directing, producing, acting, and staying in shape, my days were always chaotic yet fulfilling. Now that the war has halted everything, I feel an immense emptiness. It’s crucial for me to stay active, even when there’s little to do. I try to find new things to keep me motivated, as sitting idle is not an option. It’s a struggle, but I’m determined to make the most of it.

How do you continue your artistic activity?

With Lebanon’s entertainment industry at a standstill, I've been focusing on finding new ways to stay artistically motivated and reflecting on what truly matters now, which often sparks fresh ideas for new plays. Despite the challenges, I’m using this time to explore new creative directions. Additionally, there are still opportunities to perform abroad where it's safer, allowing us to showcase the hard work and talent that we’ve been developing. These moments of performance beyond our borders help keep the passion for theater alive.

How do you see Lebanon’s future?

I believe there’s always light at the end of a dark tunnel, and I hold onto the hope that Lebanon will find its way through this. Despite the difficulties, there’s a resilience in the people and a deep love for the country that can push us forward. I just hope we get to see that light soon and rebuild a future where creativity and opportunity can thrive again.

To overcome the fear and anxiety, what do you suggest to our readers?

While I'm not much of a reader, The Power of Now really helped me overcome personal challenges and eased my anxiety by teaching me to focus on the present. It made me realize that the "now" is all we truly have, and cherishing it can bring a sense of peace. As someone passionate about musical comedies, I believe that music has the power to elevate your soul and transport you to a universe we dream of and desperately need. Each person has their own unique taste in music, so I encourage readers to explore what resonates with them personally.

Any last words?

We are all more alike than we think. Though we may hold different beliefs or political views, deep down, we all want what's best for Lebanon—we want to live, dream, and accomplish beautiful things here. I dream of a better Lebanon, and I hope it’s just around the corner. We must stay strong and keep hoping for the best.
