Artist's Biography
Founded in 2010, the choir came into existence to celebrate prayers at Notre Dame de Jamhour College, driven by the vision of Father Denis Meyer and led by Maestro Hayssam Azzi. Just a year later, the music school and orchestra were established. Over the years, the project gained momentum and earned an international reputation.
The choir had the honor of performing at prestigious international festivals such as the Taizé Youth Meetings in Rome (2012), Prague (2014), and Beirut (2019). In a significant achievement, they were selected to record the official Arabic version of Taizé songs for the label “Deutsche Grammophon” in 2019.
Their musical journey included captivating performances at events like Al Solle della Sardegna (2015 and 2017), Verona Garda Estate (2016), Beirut Chants International Festival (2016, 2017, and 2019), and concert tours in Cyprus (summer 2018) and the picturesque South of Italy, Poulia (summer 2019).
In addition to their impressive performances, the choir has had the privilege of participating in multiple masterclasses and collaborations with esteemed musicians and artists including Nicholas Porte, Ibrahim Maalouf, Raina Infantino, Corinne Haddad, Michaela Mengeras, Giuliano Rinaldi, Milad Tarabay, Anna Marieke Zijlstra, Christine Marchais, Naji Hakim, Marc Sifert, Zeina Sayeh Kayali, Jacqueline Tabet, Anne Claire Samuel El Khoury, and many more.
In 2019, the music school formalized a partnership with the regional conservatory in Rouen, France, further enriching their musical endeavors. In 2022, Mr. Hayssam Azzi relocated to France, founding with the Jamhour Choir alumni the “Jaw’a Choir of Lebanon in Paris”, an affiliate of the Jamhour Choir . This marked a new chapter as Mrs. Manal Assaf assumed the role of conductor.
Undeterred, the choir continues to captivate audiences across diverse Lebanese regions and eagerly prepares for an upcoming concert tour in Cyprus next summer.
