On August 4, 2020, at 6.08PM, a massive explosion caused by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate took place at the Beirut port, in the heart of the Lebanese capital. With this devastating blast, over 180 individ- uals were killed, 6,500 were injured, and 300,000 were left with destroyed homes. The reconstruction of impacted schools, hospitals, and businesses has been estimated at several billion dollars. In addition, the deadly event occurred in the midst of political, economic and public health crises that had left 70,000 citizens unemployed.
The Project
This October 4th, 2020, renowned cyclist Lance Armstrong will lead Bike for Beirut, an event made possible by Tom Barrak, Ziad Ghandour and Maxime Chaya.
“Bike for Beirut” aims to raise awareness and funds to support four Lebanese NGOs that are currently undertaking the vital tasks of reconstruction and rehabilitation- ranging from home repairs, to food security, to medical aid. All funds collected will be equally split between the four initiatives.
The peloton will start at Silo 12 and cycle through the streets of Beirut, briefly visiting each of the four NGOs before returning to the Beirut Port.
