Music lecturer and researcher Dr. Gabrielle Messeder sheds light on the findings of her research about Brazilian music in Lebanon in ‘Golden Age’ Beirut. Messeder will share stories of encounters between local Lebanese and visiting Brazilian musicians from the mid-1950s until the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War in 1975. During this time, Beirut’s cosmopolitan reputation and vibrant nightlife attracted musicians from all over the world. Messeder will discuss how the legacies of these Lebanese-Brazilian musical collaborations can be heard in key masterpieces of prominent Lebanese artists culminating in the creation of a ‘Lebanese bossa nova’ style which has proved influential to musicians in Lebanon and across the Arab world.
In order to complete the musical panorama, Gabrielle Messeder will moderate a round table discussion tackling the more recent, current, and future state of Brazilian music in Lebanon. Guest speakers and friends from the local music scene, some of whom Messeder worked with to develop her PhD, are invited. A live performance of Brazilian Music will close the event with typical Brazilian finger food and beverage served.
