Art is a metaphor of reality. As a metaphor, it is a true expression of reality, and in this sense it is the truth. Bente Christensen-Ernst paintings are based on a stylised realism. Then by means of the captions, she turns her paintings into metaphors. Fruits and vegetables become people while people are turned into concepts.
She says: “my paintings are not political, although some may like to see them that way. As a contemporary artist, I am a witness of contemporary life. My paintings are my testimony.”

Life is temporary. Contemporary art is temporary as well. Life is a metaphor, and metaphors are what we live by.
