Where are our cultural players in times of war, and what are they doing?
L'Agenda Culturel went to meet them, interview them and listen to their stories.
Nicole Karam, gallerist/artist. Lives in Beirut.
How are you doing?
I have mixed feelings! Sadness over Lebanon’s current state but hope for its rebirth, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
What is your daily life like in a time of war?
I begin each day by calling my kids, who now live abroad due to Lebanon's instability! A bittersweet routine that leaves a deep void. Then, I prepare a meal and head to La Maison D’art my gallery/studio, my refuge from the chaos. In my art, I escape the atmosphere of war and channel my vision and emotions into creativity.
How do you continue your artistic activity?
I’m deeply focused on my Libanaise pop-art series as it depicts Lebanese women! I’m sculpting and painting more than ever. I feel blessed with the gift of creativity and inspiration, which drives me to thrive, even during challenging times.
How do you see Lebanon's future?
I’m optimistic. As an artist, my intuition tells me that Lebanon will shine again as a hub of art and beauty.
To overcome fear and anxiety, what do you suggest to our readers?
Book: “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield, an inspiring guide for overcoming internal obstacles to creativity.
Series: “The Crown”, which inspired me to paint Queen Elizabeth in my Pop art style. It’s a compelling portrayal of history and resilience.
Music:
Lang Lang’s piano performances on YouTube bring me peace.
Any last words?
Never lose hope in Lebanon. Our country has a unique soul that captivates everyone who experiences it. Be proud to stay Lebanese!
