Project
As part of our effort in fuel. to break through to another level of photography in Lebanon,
we are organizing a workshop on the fundamentals (both theoretical and practical) of
photography as art, from composition to printing.
Biography
French. Born in 1964. Yann Charbonnier worked as a photography assistant in fashion,
portrait and advertising in the early 1980s in New York and Paris. In 1988, he embarked on
a 30-year journey on the relationship between animals and humans, and received several
grants for this project. In 2015, Yann started working on the Mediterranean Sea, and
received artist residencies at the Villa Medici in Rome and Modern and Contemporary Art
Museum (MACAM) Foundation in Lebanon.
Yann has exhibited in New York, Düsseldorf, Vienna, Cologne, Paris, Arles and Brittany. His
work is part of prestigious art collections worldwide. He works in black and white as well
as color, and uses rectangle and square formats. Yann’s work is devoted to analog, and he
uses traditional techniques like gelatin silver, platinum-palladium, Cibachrome and
charcoal Fresson.
Program
This workshop will include an in-depth seminar by Yann Charbonnier. Participants will be
expected to fully immerse themselves, do research and watch online documentary
materials that will be recommended. Asking questions and engaging in the group
discussion will be a must in order to move forward, learn and take this workshop to its
highest level. Yann will also give readings, reviews and feedback on the portfolios submitted
by the participants, and discuss with them ways of moving forward in their photography
career.
Detailed Program:
Day 1:
Three-hour seminar on the art of photography:
● Introduction to art history and photography: Genres - compositional methods
- lighting
● The place of photography in the world of art, and its fundamental function.
● Varying aesthetics
● Choice of camera and format
● Printing
Day 2:
● Portfolio reading and reviews
● Further discussion
● Wrap-up
